Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)
What is Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)?
Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) is a special liquid used to slow down tooth decay rate significantly in its tracks. It’s a safe, quick, and non-invasive way to treat cavities—especially helpful for young children or those who may not yet be ready for traditional dental fillings.
At Descanso Smiles: Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we may recommend SDF as part of your child’s cavity management plan.
How Does SDF Work?
SDF combines:
- Silver – which kills cavity-causing bacteria
- Fluoride – which strengthens tooth enamel and prevents future decay
When SDF is applied to a decayed area, it hardens and stops the cavity from getting worse. It’s especially useful for baby teeth or when traditional fillings aren't ideal at the moment.
✅ Benefits of SDF
- Painless and quick (takes just a minute or two)
- No shots or drilling
- Slows or stops active decay
- Cost-effective
- Great for young children, those with special needs, or anxious patients
⚠️ What Should I Expect?
- The treated area will turn dark or black—this is a sign the cavity has been stopped. This discoloration is only on the decayed part of the tooth.
- Healthy parts of the tooth will not be stained.
- If aesthetics are a concern (for example, with front teeth), we will discuss your options.
Is SDF a Permanent Solution?
Not always. SDF slows decay, but it doesn’t restore the tooth’s shape or function. In many cases, it may be a temporary solution until a traditional restoration (like a filling or crown) can be placed.
Our team at Descanso Smiles will monitor the area closely and let you know if or when further treatment is needed.
