First Visit
Before the first visit…
There are a few helpful things to keep in mind before your child’s first visit. A little preparation can make a big difference in helping your child feel safe, comfortable, and even excited about visiting Descanso Smiles!
✅ First Visit DOs:
-
Treat it like a fun, normal part of growing up.
Talk about the visit positively—like going to the park or a playdate!
-
Use encouraging words.
Let your child know that Dr. Suh and his friendly team will count their teeth and help keep them clean and shiny. Saying things like, “This will be fun!” helps set the tone.
-
Play “dentist” at home.
Take turns pretending to count teeth with a toothbrush. Make it a fun game!
-
Read a book about the dentist.
Children’s stories can help explain the process in a gentle, engaging way.
-
Schedule the appointment at a well-rested time.
A good nap or night’s sleep makes everything smoother.
-
Share any medical or emotional concerns.
Let us know if your child has specific needs—we’re here to help.
-
Ask questions!
We’re happy to explain every step and help you feel confident.
-
Model good habits.
Brush and floss together—and talk about dental care as a positive part of daily life!
First Visit DON’Ts:
-
Avoid using scary words.
Try not to say “hurt,” “shot,” “needle,” “pain,” or “drill” around your child.
-
Don’t share your own fears.
Even phrases like “Don’t be scared” or “It won’t hurt” can create unnecessary worry.
-
Don’t stress if your child cries.
It’s natural and normal! We’re experienced in helping kids through new experiences with care and patience.
-
And don’t be shy—ask Dr. Suh anything!
We love when parents are involved and informed.
We’re honored to care for your child’s smile.
With your help, their first dental visit can be the beginning of a lifetime of healthy, happy smiles!
